Because of my schedule I could only get to the phone bank after 7:00 p.m. I figured I’d be able to knock out a couple of pages before it was time to shut down for the night. I was wrong.
On my fourth call I got an older individual from a rural area of the state. He was undecided. We talked for over a half hour. (Our field organizer jokingly said, “That only counts as one call. You’re messing up our metrics.”) He was concerned about the war. He was concerned about the economy. He wanted to talk. So, we did.
He didn’t like McCain. We talked about Obama, including the rumors that the right continues to float around.
He told me he voted for Bush once, but not again, telling a republican friend that he was voting for Kerry in 2004, “If I step in cow shit, I ain’t gonna step in it again.”
At the end of our conversation he told me that he’d probably vote for Obama. Probably.
