Their “damage control” was probably their recent outbursts at the NY Times. They knew the story was going to break anyway, so they did their best to stoke outrage against the Times beforehand. That might work for the base, but that’s not something independents and moderates will appreciate.
some pique in Brooks and Isikoff for the McCain campaign’s pushback against the NYT? Mark Twain advised against ever picking a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel, and I’d love nothing better than to see the formerly doting press corps become thoroughly annoyed with McSame.
