And if you’re a woman even thinking about wavering on voting for Obama because Clinton didn’t get the nomination, you’ll want to watch it. Lily was just on stage at the Democratic National Convention voicing her support of Barack Obama:
In case you are unfamiliar with Lily Ledbetter, she was a female supervisor at a Goodyear plant in Alabama for 19 years. She consistently did the same work as her male counterparts in similar positions, only she was getting paid less for it, a blatantly illegal act by her employer. She sued Goodyear, and a jury agreed that Goodyear should pay Ledbetter the difference in her pay for the entirety. The catch is that Ledbetter didn’t find out about the discriminatory pay until the end of her 19 years at Goodyear. According to the US Supreme Court (in a 5-4 decision, all of the judges siding with Goodyear were Bush-Reagan appointees) Ledbetter should have sued within six months of the first pay raise. Nevermind that she didn’t know that she was getting smaller pay raises for 19 years.
Obama supported the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which died as a result of a Republican filibuster. McCain, who didn’t bother to show up to vote, later said that he opposed the bill because it would open up all sorts of lawsuits. Yeah, exactly. That’s the point. You want people who do bad things to be sued so they won’t do it again.
More on Lily Ledbetter and her landmark case here.
I kept wishing she would mention McCains statement, but I found her very affecting overall. I was blown away by the woman from North Carolina though; she was so direct and natural.
