Pete Kinder, the incumbent republican lieutenant governor of Missouri, and Sam Page, his likely Democratic challenger in the general election, have filed their fourth quarter campaign finance reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

We’ll start with Kinder, the veteran campaigner who’s obviously never seen a big contribution he didn’t like:

2. ALL MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED THIS PERIOD $246,685.62

Wow, you look at the “total receipts” and it boggles the mind. You think, “How is anyone going to compete with that?” Until you look at Line 28:

[emphasis added]

Hmmm. Why is that? That’s a lot of money that’s not there anymore. Well, you’ve got to look at this:

Wow. December 15th was a very busy day at the Kinder campaign. Cutting all those checks must have made them all feel like Santa’s elves. Probably not, but I bet Kinder’s fundraising people were feeling a little blue.

It has to be a “refun” – it’s obviously not original fun for Pete Kinder to send back (yes, let’s break out our calculators because it looks like serious money) $335,331.58. I’m not certain that this is all of it – after a long while of cutting and pasting I was starting to hallucinate dollar signs and this stuff was intermixed with golf cart rental, catering, flowers, plaques, sporting clays (?) and the like…

I don’t know about anyone else, but I find the following expenditure a tad bit ironic, given the refunds above:

Dowell Consulting Group 10/04/2007 grassroots development $12,350.00

[emphasis added]

As for Sam Page:

Committee[e]: PAGE FOR MISSOURI

1. TOTAL RECEIPTS FOR THIS ELECTION PREVIOUSLY REPORTED $504,497.79

2. ALL MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED THIS PERIOD $154,973.00

3. ALL LOANS RECEIVED THIS PERIOD $0.00

4. MISCELLANEOUS RECEIPTS THIS PERIOD $105.40

5. SUBTOTAL MONETARY RECEIPTS THIS PERIOD ( SUM 2A + 3A + 4A ) $155,078.40

6. IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED THIS PERIOD$4,837.50

7. TOTAL ALL RECEIPTS THIS PERIOD (SUM 5A + 6A)$159,915.90

8. FUNDS USED FOR REPAYING LOANS THIS PERIOD $0.00

9. TOTAL ALL RECEIPTS THIS ELECTION(SUM 1B + 7A – 8A)$664,413.69

[emphasis added]

Gee, that’s not bad at all. In fact, it’s right up there with ole’ Pete. Let’s take a look at Line 28:

25. MONEY ON HAND AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS REPORTING PERIOD (INCLUDING FUNDS IN DEPOSITORY, CASH, SAVINGS ACCOUNTS AND ALL OTHER INVESTMENTS) $332,875.01

26. MONETARY RECEIPTS THIS PERIOD (FROM ITEM 5) $155,078.40

27. MONETARY DISBURSEMENTS MADE THIS PERIOD (SUM 11 + 17 + 24) $133,160.39

A) DISBURSEMENTS BY CHECK$133,160.39

B) DISBURSEMENTS BY CASH$0.00

28. MONEY ON HAND AT THE CLOSE OF THIS REPORTING PERIOD (SUM 25 + 26 – 27) $354,793.02

[emphasis added]

Uh yep. At this stage Pete Kinder is not going to be able to drown his Democratic Party opposition in money. It just might be the opposite.

Detailed Summary of Contributions And Loans Received

Committee: PAGE FOR MISSOURI

Report Date: 01/15/2008

3. TOTAL MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED FROM PERSONS GIVING $100 OR LESS $7,989.00

The way I figure it, the number of people who made small contributions to Sam Page appears to be about the same as the number of people/entities Pete Kinder sent over $330,000.00 in excess contribution refunds. I kind of like those numbers.
