Earlier this week, I received an e-mail from People for the American Way urging me to call Senator McCaskill because she was on the fence about whether or not to confirm judge Leslie Southwick, a painfully backward, rightward nominee for the federal bench.  Ralph Neas commented:  “Southwick appears ready and willing to turn back the clock on fifty years of social justice progress in our nation.”

When I called, the aide who took my message told me that he though Claire would vote against the nomination–as, in fact, she did.

Perhaps she was never on the fence.  Perhaps she just didn’t make her opinion known promptly.  But plenty of Democrats were on the wrong side of this vote and Southwick was confirmed.  Unfortunately.

Thank you, Senator McCaskill, for voting as a Democrat ought to have done.
