HB 1109: because the contrived right wingnut "War on [the holiday season]" supersedes any sense

General Assembly, HB 1089, HB 1109, missouri, Rick Brattin

…or common sense, for that matter. Another salvo, as Representative Rick Brattin (r) prefiled a bill:

SECOND REGULAR SESSION

HOUSE BILL NO. 1109

96TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY

INTRODUCED BY REPRESENTATIVES BRATTIN (Sponsor), BAHR, DAVIS, BERRY, CURTMAN, POLLOCK AND WHITE (Co-sponsors).

4748L.01I                                                                                             D. ADAM CRUMBLISS, Chief Clerk

AN ACT

To amend chapter 9, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to federal holidays.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:

Section A. Chapter 9, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 9.015, to read as follows:

9.015. No state or local governmental entity, public building, public park, public school, or public setting or place shall ban or otherwise restrict the practice, mention, celebration, or discussion of any federal holiday.

[emphasis in original]

In case you’re wondering, here are the Federal holidays for 2012, from the Office of Personnel Management:

2012 Federal Holidays

Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees. Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).

Monday, January 2* New Year’s Day

Monday, January 16 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, February 20** Washington’s Birthday

Monday, May 28 Memorial Day

Wednesday, July 4 Independence Day

Monday, September 3 Labor Day

Monday, October 8 Columbus Day

Monday, November 12*** Veterans Day

Thursday, November 22 Thanksgiving Day

Tuesday, December 25 Christmas Day

Anyone think that right wingnut republicans are really, really interested in enforcing the celebration of Labor Day across the state?

Think again:

HB 1089

Eliminates the prevailing wage in Missouri

Sponsor: White, Bill (129)

Co-Sponsor: Kelley, Mike (126) … et al.

Proposed Effective Date: 8/28/2012

LR Number: 4120L.01I

Last Action: 12/19/2011 – Prefiled (H)

Bill String: HB 1089

[emphasis added]

I haven’t noticed anyone complaining about New Year’s, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Veterans Day. It’s got to be something else.

Then, there is the Addams Family take on Thanksgiving. That would make for an interesting presentation for that Federal holiday.
