We’re big enough to take care of ourselves (September 4, 2013)
….The lege cuts economic development so Rex Sinquefield can have a tax cut, so the Jackson County legislature puts a half-cent sales tax increase on the November ballot to fund biomedical research….
….We will move forward, and bitter resentments of our outstate cousins aside, we won’t be hindered on the road to progress just because they persist in sending ill-mannered and stupid people to represent them in the state lege….
Today, at the Missouri Ethics Commission, serious people are showing up with serious money in support of the Health Research Tax on the ballot in Jackson County in November:
C131107 09/04/2013 COMMITTEE FOR RESEARCH TREATMENTS AND CURES J E Dunn Construction Company 1001 Locust St Kansas City MO 64106 9/4/2013 $100,000.00
C131107 09/04/2013 COMMITTEE FOR RESEARCH TREATMENTS AND CURES The Civic Council of Greater Kansas City 1200 Main Suite 230 Kansas City MO 64105 9/4/2013 $100,000.00
[emphasis added]
Such a novel concept – they’re actually from Jackson County.

I say, why not. It’s a regressive sales tax, just what the doctor ordered when lawmakers won’t live up to their obligations to fund the public welfare. While this tax is benign in itself, it’s one more step to funding government via regressive mechanisms, just what “serous” folks like Rex Sinquefield want.
