Hulshof representing Northeast MO can explain the results up there in traditionally Democratic counties (Nixon won Boone County by 13 though). Hulshof’s roots in Sikeston is probably he was the first Republican gubernatorial candidate to ever win Mississippi County. But Nixon won Greene County by almost 10 points. Hulshof was unable to win any Springfield market county by more than five points. Jay Nixon also crushed Hulshof in St. Louis.
