Let’s face it, the story of this election has been Barack Obama’s amazing ability to energize supporters into action. The marriage of this energy with a highly disciplined campaign organization, while great news for Democrats everywhere, has also made Democratis in some quarters a little nervous that volunteers will be flocking to help his campaign and not the many deserving downballot candidates who are fighting close but winnable races around our fair state. Candidates like Judy Baker and Kay Barnes, Sam Page and Clint Zweifel. Candidates like Kristy Manning, Chris Kelly, Deb Lavender, and Rebecca McClanahan. So I’m reminding you, Barack Obama can’t change the country by himself. Politically, he’s going to need allies in Congress and in statehouses.

And don’t forget that after the 2010 elections, we’ll be redistricting again. A Democratic governor and state legislature will be necessary to make sure that congressional district and state legislature district boundaries are drawn fairly.

To that end, Jay Nixon is organizing a massive GOTV effort focused on state needs, and he along with local candidates will be hopping around to rallies with those GOTV volunteers. The work itself will be easy – volunteers are just hanging doorknob hangers reminding Democratic-leaning voters to vote for the Democratic candidates. If for some reason, you’re not helping Obama this weekend, you should be helping a downticket Dem so that they can make Obama’s job, and our lives, a little easier in the next four years.
