Rodney Hubbard, (mostly) a Democrat

missouri, Robin Wright-Jones, Rodney Hubbard, Senate District 5

Democrats in the city of St. Louis and in the fifth senatorial district in particular are fighting each other. Rodney Hubbard and Robin Wright-Jones are duking it out for the senatorial nomination, which is to say, for the whole ball of wax in the fifth, because no Republican has filed. (Why would one bother in the city?)

Robin is progressive right down the line. Rodney is … not. I’ll skip all the gossip about parking space and office space and who hangs with whom in the capitol, in favor of focusing on money, issues, and accomplishments.

From 2007 to the present, Rodney accepted $38,000 from Republican billionaire Rex Sinquefield. And what did Mr. Sinquefield get for his money? He got Rodney’s vote in favor of vouchers and another in favor of lifting campaign contribution limits. Rodney will tell you that he’d have voted that way in any case, that those were votes of conscience.

That may be. But they’re not votes we expect from a Democrat. Nor are they the only votes that should concern progressives. Starting with Rodney’s vote to sell off MOHELA assets in 2007, ProVote lists several troubling stands in his record.

In fact, his record is so troubling that ALEC named Hubbard one of four legislators of the year in 2007. And why would an award for being a good legislator be troubling? Click over to the ALEC site and see for yourself, from Bush’s grinning mug all over the front page through photos of Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich. When you reach page nine, you’ll see a picture of Rodney with the other three award winners for that year and you can read why ALEC chose him:

Rep. Hubbard voted for Tort Reform, Workers’ Compensation reform, and a Quality Jobs Act. He also helped develop and co-sponsor the Milton Friedman Put Parents in Charge Act.

Whaddaya know, those are some of the very votes Pro-Vote rated negatively.

Despite Perhaps because of his unprogressive attitudes, Hubbard has been raking in the campaign contributions–not just from Sinquefield but also from developer Paul McKee (more on his eminent domain grabs within the week) and from supporters of Mayor Slay. So far, Rodney’s taken in $291,000 for this election and spent $141,000 (versus Robin’s $62,000 taken in and $33,000 spent). To give him his due, he is also a hard worker and a smart campaigner.

The heart of his campaign is his claim that he brings home the bacon for his district. This year the legislature appropriated $2 million for a re-entry program to help ex-convicts find jobs. Rodney issued a press release claiming the credit for getting that passed. Of course, Jamilah Nasheed, who was on the Budget Committee that it went through, also issued a press release claiming credit.

Considering the competing press releases, it’s not easy to say who deserves the credit. (And by the way, Margaret Donnelly, a member of the Budget Committee, also begged for the funds.) But Rodney’s claim is bolstered by Allen Icet, the Republican Chair of the Budget Committee, who asserted that the funds were in because Rodney had asked for them–and, by the way, that Democrats shouldn’t ask for anything else.

Sounds like that settles it. Icet ought to know whose entreaty swayed him. Except … I wonder why Icet did Rodney such a favor. Was it Hubbard’s winning personality? Or was it that Icet wanted to boost Rodney’s chances in this election so that the Republicans would have an ally in the Senate for the next four years?

Whatever the case, other than the re-entry bill, Rodney’s legislative accomplishments are slim. This year for example, only one bill that he co-sponsored passed. That bill, HB2058, was an economic stimulus package with … wait for it … 102 bi-partisan co-sponsors. Along with the sponsor, then, Hubbard gets 1/103rd of the credit.

He can rightly claim some power in the legislature, however.  Of the 63 House committees, only three are headed by Democrats: T.D. El-Amin is Vice Chair of the Special Committee on Urban Issues, Ted Hoskins (another African-American beneficiary of Sinquefield money and proponent of the voucher system) chairs the Special Committee on Urban Education Reforms, and Rodney Hubbard chairs the Special Committee on Urban Issues.

Rodney Hubbard, then, has obtained some power in the Republican-controlled House even though he’s a member of the minority party, but one is hard pressed to see how he has used it to benefit his community. The re-entry program might be mostly his doing. Beyond that … he gets a shrug. And a rap on the knuckles for voting to lift campaign finance limits and voting for vouchers.

But don’t let my emphasis on those votes and on his ALEC award mislead you, because even when you take that downside into consideration, Rodney still got an 87 percent positive rating from Pro-Vote (to Robin’s 100 percent rating). He is a Democrat. Mostly.

Of campaign signs, the failing republican brand, and pearl clutching

campaign meta

The Johnson County Democratic Club and the Johnson County Democratic Central Committee acquired a store front campaign headquarters location in downtown Warrensburg at 128 N. Holden at the beginning of the month. In the ensuing days volunteers have descended on the location to clean, decorate, and staff headquarters for its various functions. It is a high traffic location and quite visible to the general public.

A Democratic candidate’s 4 x 6 sign facing the courthouse and the statue of “Old Drum” on the square.

Since headquarters has opened there has been a steady stream of individuals walking in to get bumper stickers, campaign literature, and yard signs. And yes, the phone bank is up and running.

Location, location, location. The Johnson County Democratic Party campaign headquarters in Warrensburg. Note the fortuitous traffic sign placement.

And those large signs on the sides of buildings?

It appears that somebody started clutching their pearls and complained to the city that the signs didn’t conform with city ordinances. A representative of the city supposedly came by headquarters to take a look at the offending sign (affixed with lag bolts), laughed, and said, “It looks permanent to me.” He smiled and chuckled to himself as he walked away. Supposedly.

Given the interest and traffic at Democratic headquarters the republican brand doesn’t seem to be doing so well. You’d think they’d worry about that more than the placement of Democratic campaign signs.

Barack Obama, Byron DeLear, Iraq, John McCain, Lyndon Bode, withdrawal plan

On Monday, I asked members of Congress in Missouri and those running for the position if they would comment on the recent dustup between Barack Obama and John McCain over Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s support for Obama’s withdrawal plan.

The first two responses are in. Byron DeLear was not surprisingly first to comment, doing so (bonus points!) in a long comment here on the blog. Money quote:

We must reverse Bush and Akin’s policy in Iraq, send a message to the Iraqi government that we don’t intend on occupying their country permanently, and begin an immediate and responsible “phased withdrawal” of our troops.

This means systematically redeploying those troops, bringing our national guard troops home, and reengaging the international community, including the UN into a peace-keeping role.

Most candidates like to discuss these issues as if they were running for Commander-in-Chief, that is, ‘here is my plan for Iraq’ — or — ‘this is my 10 year road map for the Iraq War’, etc.

And although there may be value in unpacking the ‘big picture’ here from an academic perspective, or just from a conversational one, as a Federal legislator for MO-2, I will be just one of 435 votes in the US House.

A progressive vote.

And Lyndon Bode, a relatively conservative Democratic candidate for the 9th Congressional District, chimes in via e-mail:

Yes – I would support the withdrawal of troops with the request of Iraq government officials saying they are ready to take charge. Therefore if they support Obama’s plan then I support the plan. I believe this has been the goal from the start. A free Iraq country and government.

We’ll keep posting responses as we get them.

Kinder Roving Missouri

22 Tuesday Jul 2008

Lt. Governor Peter Kinder is bringing in Karl Rove for a fundraiser July 25.

A couple of reasons why it seems fitting that Kinder would be bring in the king of political coverups:

Peter Kinder’s Chief-of-Staff resigned June 6 because it was made public that the COS had been arrested for having pornographic conversations with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl, actually a cop. (The police report is attached.)  His YahooMessenger handle was “bestinmo.”

Within three hours, Kinder declared an investigation proved the COS never had conversations with the youngster on his state computer and that the COS was on compensatory leave during one of the weekdays police exchanged pornographic conversations with the COS.  People at the COS level in Missouri governor, do not receive comp time, timesheets can be easily amended, and investigations of computers cannot be conducted in three hours according to a cybercrime expert I’ve talked with.

The report from the investigation of the state computer has been sought, but the Office of Administration has yet to respond. OA is the office that conducted the investigation.  They have until Monday to respond to an opens records request.  According to the cybercrime expert, we can fully expect the investigation to be insufficient regardless of what is provided.

To top that, Kinder has now hired the head of OA to be his new chief of staff.  That guy, the guy who did the investigation of the alleged pedophile’s computer, is already under investigation for helping Gov. Matt Blunt delete possibly incriminating e-mails.

Peter Kinder is currently acting as governor while Blunt is on an 18-day “trade trip” to Europe.  In effect Kinder is governor, and has the authority to release the e-mails the governor has kept secret since his whole scandal began in October. Kinder, of course, is also refusing to produce the e-mails.

Kinder is covering for his former Chief-of-Staff and the governor, and has hired a man who was also part of both coverups. Kinder went from one suspected criminal to another suspected criminal for his top aide.  Now, he is bringing in the King of Kover-ups Karl Rove and charging people $2,700 to come.

Just to pile on, Kinder has been close friends with Rush Limbaugh since the two were in kindergarten together.

It is as if he is without shame.

If you want to beat Karl Rove give what you can at http://www.sampage.com

The Case For Governor Kathleen Sebelius

22 Tuesday Jul 2008

Posted by Michael Bersin in Uncategorized

As the date for selecting a running mate for the presumptive nominees approaches there have been many names thrown into contention for both candidates. While there have been many qualified names offered up for the Democrats and many people have their own personal favorites, I am no exception. According to conventional political wisdom the main purpose of the vice-presidential nominee is to bring unity to the party if there has been a fractious primary, or to bring geographical strength to an area where a candidate may be weak, or for gender, generational or ideological concerns. I believe that one of the top and best choices for Senator Obama’s selection as a running mate would be Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas.

Now, I have to admit that I have a personal bias towards Governor Sebelius and the State of Kansas. I attended the University of Kansas and have been a major Jayhawks fan for decades. All of that aside though, I would like to discuss my case for having Governor Sebelius on the ticket for the Democrats. I have been a big fan of Governor Sebelius since she was elected Insurance Commissioner, while I live in the neighboring state of Missouri I have been keeping an eye on Kathleen Sebelius. Her star has risen swiftly in state and national political circles and she had been rumored for other positions previously.

Most of you I am sure are familiar with her biography, but for those who are not let me give you some of the highlights. She was born in Cincinnati, OH and attended Catholic schools throughout her life. She moved to Kansas in 1974 and attended the University of Kansas where she earned a Master of Public Administration degree. Her father was a Governor of Ohio and her husband is a federal magistrate judge. She was born and raised a Catholic and I believe is still a practicing Catholic. While I personally have issues with the Catholic Church, I do not hold them against the Governor.

My first point for Governor Sebelius is the fact that she is a Governor. Unlike legislators the public views Governors as actually doing work and accomplishing things. Let’s face it a legislator can go through their whole career and never produce any meaningful legislation. Governors on the other hand govern, they submit budgets and handle crisis’. There is a reason that many of our past Presidents were ex-governors. The two political Parties have done such a good job of tearing down each other in the Congress that the public’s perception of legislators is just above child molesters.

Next is the fact that she is a blue Governor of a traditionally red and Midwestern state. For the record though Kansas is not a traditionally red state. Let’s remember that Kansas was a free state and fought for the abolition of slavery. Kansas also offered free homesteads to freed slaves. Kansas has had it’s issues with race, but they have always been willing to give people a chance. As a rural farm state they have always believed in the value of hard work and common sense. While they may be too conservative for a lot of folks taste they have a history of live and let live and Kathleen Sebelius typifies that attitude. As Governor she has refused to sign abortion legislation that would criminalize, eliminate, or reduce access to abortions, even though she is personally pro-life.

Another of her strong characteristics is that she is a fighter and will stand up for what she believes in. This was demonstrated when she stood up to the energy companies that wanted to build coal fired power plants in the state. Many thought this would reduce her popularity due to the smear campaigns being employed by the energy companies, in actually she became more popular. Governor Sibelius has continued to gain popularity in the state and nationally for her stands on the issues of capital punishment, the environment, and a rational gun policy. Governor Sebelius would be a hearty foe for any Republican VP candidate during the debates and on the campaign trail. She is tough and effective yet she has not lost her capacity to be a woman.

My final point but by all means not the final reason for Governor Sebelius to be chosen is the fact that she is a woman. I believe that having Governor Sebelius on the ticket will not only shore up the rural white and Midwestern voters, but would also allow the Democrats to break two historical barriers in the same election. Many of the women in this country wanted to see Hillary elected not only because of her being a great candidate, but also due to her historical candidacy. Having Governor Sibelius on the ticket would go a long way to motivate and excite those many Hillary supporters who wanted to also be a part of a history making campaign. It would also demonstrate how much the Democrats respect the significant contributions women  have made not only to the Party, but also the nation.

Will Governor Sebelius get the nod for VP? I doubt it the odds on favorites coming out of the Obama camp are white males with strong national defense backgrounds to short-circuit the un-patriotic and inexperience arguments that the “swift boaters” are going to present in the fall. The Republican memes have already begun with the same campaign rhetoric they have used the last three election cycles (flip-flopping and weak on defense), I guess if it keeps working. I for one would applaud the selection of Governor Sebelius because she exemplifies many fine qualities that our country is sorely in need of.

You don’t have to be anti-man to be pro-woman.  ~Jane Galvin Lewis

Beth Grubb, campaign finance, Mike McGhee

Beth Grubb (D) is challenging incumbent Mike McGhee (r) in this race. We’ve previously written about the 122nd Legislative District and Mike McGhee’s right wingnut view of the world:

Beth Grubb filed her second quarter 2008 campaign finance report with the Missouri Ethics Commission on July 14th (amended on July 20th):

A little bit of labor help (despite McGhee getting the AFL-CIO endorsement) and a number of individual contributions.

Campaign expenditures were for printing, signs, fundraising, and a campaign manager (!). The latter is a cost effective and smart move. It’s a sign that Beth Grubb is quite serious about this race.
