Democrat Kristi Kenney is running for the open seat in the 120th held by Shannon Cooper (r) who is term limited out. The 120th includes Henry County (and the city of Clinton); the southern portions of Johnson County; and parts of Bates, Cass, and Pettis counties. Kenney challenged Cooper in 2006, running a good campaign against an entrenched and well-financed incumbent:

State Representative – District 120 – 2006 General Election

Cooper, Shannon REP 8,051 55.9%

Kenney, Kristi L. DEM 6,352 44.1%

I’ve been trying to track down who the republican candidate will be/is, but to no avail at the time of this posting.

Kenney’s 4th quarter campaign finance report shows that she’s been raising money:

Committe[e]: KRISTI KENNEY FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE

1. TOTAL RECEIPTS FOR THIS ELECTION PREVIOUSLY REPORTED $0.00

2. ALL MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED THIS PERIOD $9,290.00

9. TOTAL ALL RECEIPTS THIS ELECTION(SUM 1B + 7A – 8A) $9,290.00

15. TOTAL EXPENDITURES THIS ELECTION (SUM 10B + 14A) $397.84

28. MONEY ON HAND AT THE CLOSE OF THIS REPORTING PERIOD (SUM 25 + 26 – 27) $8,892.16

That is a strong single quarter of fundraising in an “out-state” district. Note the low expenses at this early point in the campaign (yes, a candidate is supposed to spend all of their campaign’s money – when it counts).

Over the years of looking at these campaign finance reports I have noticed that Democratic candidates tend to run “lean and mean” – that is, they usually don’t have the amount of money or the burn rate that one sees in the republican reports. But still, Democrats remain competitive.

And one sees more of this:

13. TOTAL MONETARY CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED FROM PERSONS GIVING $100 OR LESS $2,980.00

Kristi Kenney has an impressive bio, citing extensive community involvement:

She obtained an associate and bachelor’s degrees and a lifetime teaching certificate from Central Missouri State University.  Kenney has practiced law for 25 years in Clinton and has extensive experience with legal drafting, mediation and interpreting laws….

…For the past five years she has served on the Clinton City Council representing the Fourth Ward and has been Mayor Pro Tem.  She also spent nine years on the Clinton School District Board of Education where she served as Vice President and Treasurer….

….having served as Treasurer of the Central Missouri State University Foundation Board; chairing various Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce committees including Missouri Community Betterment and Academic Excellence.  She is a member of the local Mid-Day Optimists Club, P.E.O. and Arts Council.  She is also a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church where she taught the High School Sunday school class for the past ten years.

For the past 35 years, she has been married to Doug Kenney, a local physician, and they have four children, Jeffrey, Joshua, Jacob and daughter, Jaime, who have attended public schools.  Kristi grew up on a farm in rural Henry County and is the daughter of Del and Jo Ann Gretzinger and has a brother, Kurt, who farms….

This is another race to watch.
