An acquaintance was telling me that last August, when her husband, Bill, tried to vote against the Republican sponsored proposition to opt out of health care reform, the voting machine turned his no vote into a yes vote. Twice. On the third try, it finally registered a no vote.
It’s best not to even use those machines, but if you do, check the paper record to make sure it’s accurate, as Bill did. If it’s not, here’s what to do:
- Immediately notify one of the election judges at the polling place and request that all use of that machine be discontinued for the remainder of the day.
- Call the Secretary of State hotline at 1-800-NOW-VOTE
- Call the Missouri Voter Protection hotline at 866-687-8683.
- Last, but not least, call your local Board of Elections and ask to speak to a commissioner. Tell him your story and then give him hell for the district’s continued use of DREs. (In St. Louis, the commissioners are Donahue (D) and Goeke (R).)
