That sonofabitch has a lot of damned gall.
He just gave about fifteen minutes of boilerplate at the Truman Library in Independence. About a hundred people were in attendance to the hastily-assembled audience of republican footsoldiers – about all they can muster in Jackson County and we likely imported them.
This is Truman Country. We are Democrats and we have never stopped calling ourselves such. We know that government isn’t the problem, bad government that does not work for all the people is the problem. We know this, and everywhere we turn we see reminders in the name and visasge of Harry Truman.
And McCain is no Harry Truman. I dunno about you, but I am more than a little bit sick of republicans trying to claim Truman as their own. What a load of crap that is. Not one of these bastards wanting to glom on to his legacy is worthy of spit-shining Harry Truman’s boots, and as a Jackson County Democrat, I feel it is my sworn duty to point that out publicly and loudly call bullshit. You might as well go to Massachusetts and try to lay claim to the Kennedy mantle as try that stupid shit around me.
Harry’s great-nephew is equally offended. John R. Truman is holding a press conference at noon today in front of the Truman statue, by the courthouse entrance, on the town square in Independence. His theme? “You’re no Harry Truman.”
My party – the Missouri Democratic Party – is the oldest continually operating political party west of the Mississippi River, and our state capitol is named for Thomas Jefferson. Our Democratic tradition goes back all the way to the Louisiana Purchase.
We were Democrats before y’all were even Whigs, and I am not going to let you forget that. McCain is a piker, and it was a sad, pathetic joke that he came to our terrirory today to get his dumbass on, but he did.
