Ladies and gentlemen, your republican controlled Missouri General Assembly:
HB 62
Changes the laws regarding marriage and replaces marriage licenses with contracts of domestic union
Sponsor: Berry, T.J. (038)
Proposed Effective Date: 8/28/2017
LR Number: 0126H.01I
Last Action: 12/01/2016 – Prefiled (H)
Bill String: HB 62
Next Hearing: Hearing not scheduled
Calendar: Bill currently not on a House calendar
[….]
As near as we can tell the bill replaces every reference to marriage in Missouri statutes with “a party to a contract of domestic union”.
It’s going to be a very, very long legislative session.

I just ran across this bill while perusing the house bills page. It seemed odd to me that a Republican member of the house would add “or her” after “his” and replace every occurrence of “marriage” with “contract of domestic union” in every statute. What’s this guy’s angle?
Michael Bersin said:
I suspect the “angle” is to remove the concept of marriage for everyone. That is, if everyone can be married, no one can. Interestingly, the domestic union “compromise” was pretty much rejected by the wingnut right early on in the debate.
Even when they lose badly the wingnut right can’t let anything go. That’s what the bill is all about.

That’s a VERY long way to go to prove a point.
I thought the same thing after scanning all 380-some-odd pages of that bill. The premise goes, “If they’re telling us we have to honor and supply services for all marriages, then we’ll just get rid of marriages.” Kind of like a child covering his eyes and saying “You can’t see me!”
It’s petty and insulting. Luckily it shouldn’t make it out of committee. I say shouldn’t…
