The discussion seems right and I have listened to politicians to figure out whether there is a preferred pronunciation. As the article observes, there is no consistent form.
Asking students in a linguistics class, I agree that the pronunciation is a generational issue and not a regional one.
Because this is an area in which I’m supposed to have some expertise, it is of inherent interest to me and it seems to report the issue correctly.
