The lesson one should take from this is that for anyone who gets swallowed up by our culture there’s no controlling the ride.

Brownback apologizes for reaction to student’s tweet

….But Monday afternoon, Sullivan said her return to school was “really, really rough” because many classmates gave her the cold shoulder or criticized her newfound fame.
“I thought all the students would be behind me, but … even some of my closest ones were saying some pretty harsh things,” she said.
No one approached Sullivan directly on Monday, she said, but some posted Twitter comments accusing her of “just trying to get attention or trying to get the school in trouble.” One classmate told her, “You have 5,000 followers but no actual friends.”
“It was so overwhelmingly negative,” she said. “I was a little surprised that they weren’t more supportive.”
Because of that reaction, along with Brownback’s apology and the school district’s decision to not punish her, Sullivan said she plans to ignore dozens of media requests that greeted her after school Monday.
“It’s over, so I’m just kind of glad it’s over,” she said. “I’m just looking to put it behind me and kind of forget the situation….”

The one consolation is that high school is only supposed to be a point in life, not the high point.

It is very clear that Emma Sullivan of Shawnee Mission East High School is a late-charging entrant for Person of the Year at the blog here. If there was ever any doubt, it was erased when Ruth Marcus, an “opinion writer” at The Washington Post, a once-great newspaper now d/b/a Downie’s House of Sadists and Genocide Fans, weighed in on the topic of Sullivan’s admittedly disrespectful tweet regarding Kansas governor Sam Brownback, a god-bothering yahoo on the best day he ever lived. (In 2008, Brownback was one of three Republican presidential aspirants who raised his hand when they were asked how many of them didn’t believe in evolution. Good luck, Kansas!)
Anybody who can, at such a young age, prompt such an immediate outpouring of finely honed Beltway stupidity is a young lady on whom we all ought to keep an eye….

Ruth Marcus reveals another journalistic value
….Behold the mind of the American journalist: Marcus – last seen in this space three years ago demanding that Bush officials be fully shielded from all accountability for their crimes (the ultimate expression of “respect for authority”) – wants everyone to learn and be guided by extreme deference to political officials and to humbly apologize when they offend those officials with harsh criticism. In other words, Marcus wants all young citizens to be trained to be employees of The Washington Post. In a just world, Marcus’ column would be written instead by Sullivan’s mother, who exudes what the journalistic ethos should be – “I raised my kids to be independent, to be strong, to be free thinkers. If she wants to tweet her opinion about Governor Brownback, I say for her to go for it” – but people who think that way only rarely receive establishment media platforms. Instead, we’re plagued with the Ruth Marcuses of the world – “inculcate values of respect for authority”!!! – and that explains a lot.
