‘Scroogy’ omission raises ire

Staff WriterHolden – Councilman Scotty Walker took city leaders to task for failing to decorate the business district for Christmas.
“It’s inexcusable the town’s not ready for Christmas the week before,” Walker said. “I think we, as a city, should take responsibility.”
Mayor Mike Wakeman advocated forming a committee to begin the planning in mid-summer, with the city and Chamber of Commerce sharing costs.
“If we’re going to have a downtown committee,” he said, “they can discuss the future of a lot of different things.”
Walker agreed to chair the committee. Volunteers who want to serve may contact him.

You’ve got to be kidding me.
Ahem:
Missouri Constitution
Article I
BILL OF RIGHTS
Section 7Public aid for religious purposes–preferences and discriminations on religious grounds.
Section 7. That no money shall ever be taken from the public treasury, directly or indirectly, in aid of any church, sect or denomination of religion, or in aid of any priest, preacher, minister or teacher thereof, as such; and that no preference shall be given to nor any discrimination made against any church, sect or creed of religion, or any form of religious faith or worship.
Doesn’t anyone read the Missouri Constitution anymore?

Well, I happen to be that city Councilman who is pissed that my business district isn’t decorated for Christmas. I don’t care what you call the season, whether it be Christmas, Hannaka, Winter Solstice, Festivus, or whatever, the fact of the matter is most people I know call it Christmas, even if they don’t attach a religious meaning to it. Which I don’t. But every town decorates for the holidays. The last time I checked lights and decorations in December are just that, lights and decorations in December. Lights and wreaths and trees don’t promote religion, they promote festivities and happiness. And they must promote commerce too because why else would every town I’ve ever been to decorate for the season?
This is not a war on Christmas, it is a war on stupidity.
