Mary Nichols, a Democrat running against Byron DeLear for state rep in the 79th, has lost any shred of respect I might have had for her. Get a load of part of the mailer she just sent out. Under the headline “AN ELEPHANT NEVER FORGETS”, she claims that DeLear “forgot” to mention that he used to be a Rush Limbaugh Republican. (That’s elephant hide you’re seeing underneath the text.) Remember that this mailer is going out to Democrats before the primary in a district that will almost surely go Democratic in the fall.
Were any of you good progressives reading this posting raised as Republicans? That’s what I thought. Me too. Is it to your credit that you overcame the right wing propaganda imposed on you and thought for yourself? That’s all DeLear was getting at when he wrote in 2004:
I used to be a conservative right wing republican listening to all of those right wing radio talk show hosts, and subscribed to a Rush Limbaugh-esque ideology that’s all about the law of the jungle. You know, the Capitalistic ‘survival of the fittest’. Well I have come through my wicked ways, and I have seen the revelation that building the future of humanity on a foundation of greed and industrial schemes designed to prey upon the weak is simply not sustainable. Being born into a wealthy family and having gone to military school as a little boy were the pertinent ingredients that led to my march in lockstep.
Next the mailer accuses DeLear of having run for Congress in California under the Green Party banner–the implication being that he doesn’t know what he is. Could be that the blurry photo, by the way, was the only one available, but it makes him look like part of a suspicious, maybe faintly subversive group.
And now, he “claims” to be a Democrat.
Give me a Green guy who got PACE passed in Missouri any day over a real estate agent who wants to develop the Missouri river floodplain. Nichols’ mailer is–speaking of the GOP–a Karl Rove type smear tactic against another Democrat.
Look, I understand that any serious run for state rep is hard. Those candidates put themselves through the mill. So when I wrote about that race less than two weeks ago, I gave Nichols every benefit of the doubt, although I thought she had little to offer. Now, I’ll be blunt. She has no agenda to speak of other than trashing a fellow Democrat who has proven that he wants to help the people of this state.

Nichols must be desperate to engage in this sort of slimy flim flam attack. It’s one thing to discuss honest differences of opinion over issues but this is clearly mud-slinging.
Nichols is also sending out a letter telling people to vote for her because she is a female and a female has not held the seat before. That would be nice if the female in question was one who was actually the best candidate. Nichols has proven she is obviously NOT the best candidate by running these dishonest pieces.
Any real Democrat, especially progressive Democrat, who helped fund her campaign should be embarrassed that their money is part of this shameful display.

It appears that Nichols has crossed over to the dark side. She is behaving like a down and dirty Republican. Let her go make some tea and have a party for her friends. Yuk.

…and unethical. How is it that a fellow Democrat would stoop so low to attack the character of someone like Byron who has been a progressive since entering politics? He has written prolifically in defense of social justice, the environment, standardizing the vote, single payer healthcare–the list goes on and on. Ever hear him speak? He has a command of the issues and a vision for a sustainable future that I want to be living in. Mary Nichols has perverted one out of context quote and built an entire campaign strategy around it–what does that say about her ability to be a discerning advocate of the people? We in this community deserve better, I know I do. That’s why I’m voting for DeLear.

I’ll tell you about Byron. I am a Progressive Democrat. I walked into a Kitchen Table Democracy meeting one night I believe in 2004, a bi-partisan monthly gathering.
Byron was a Speaker running for Congress as a Green Candidate. Listening intensity, his every word and cohesiveness was riveting. Who was the Green Party candidate that was more of a mature, well ripened Democrat than most of the Democrats in the Party? This large man with the wisdom of Solomen and a Heart that was even greater spoke with great inner strength yet was wrapped in a blanket of truly tender caring for people, the environment and our planet. I took a great interest in Byron and his work. His unending trips to the Middle East in which he was greatly involved with meetings with various sects all directed to Peace. Byron’s work in Global Solutions was his vocation long before running for any
political office was on the screen.
I discovered that after the first meeting, I was not the only Democrat that had jumped in to supported Byron. Because I have no agenda other than an simple activist who holds a vision of an America that moves back to the structural Integrity set forth by our Framers.
In keeping with my Passion, I spent time with Byron after he lost his bid for Congress and implored him to switch to the Democratic Party. To my delight, he told me that other Democrats encouraged him also. If I had a football team, I would have traded a dozen players for 1 Byron. And we needed great Democrats in office.
Mary, Byron does know who he is. He he the embodiment of the True and Great Democrats of our time who created all that that was a springboard to the greater advancement of our society.
Today much of what was once great, now is eroding and decayed because of a thirst for power rather than aspiring towards that which is for the good of the many.
I wish you well for clearly, your campaign tactics have
blinded you. Does it lift your Spirits?

If I had any doubts, Mary Nichols scummy attack on a good Progressive Dem like DeLear would have erased them and made certain my support of DeLear. The Dems don’t need any would-be Repug-type attack dogs in our party. She doesn’t represent what we stand for.

It is such a shame that Mary has chosen this route! She has been frightened into it by the thought of losing to a clearly superior candidate, I guess. It shows me her lack of moral character and I have no respect for her actions.
Mary’s political mailings have no new ideas for Missouri.
She has no experience in getting legislation passed in Missouri, but Byron DeLear has! Mary simply has no ideas that attract me to give her my vote, whereas Byron has ideas and actions that show me he will be an active legislator, helping to propose and write laws for Missouri that will help our state grow in a progressive direction. He will not occupy a seat and just discuss and vote on other people’s ideas! Byron is brilliant and well-spoken and stands for the best of democratic ideals. He is the right candidate to represent the 79th District and I support him. His ideas are large and have impact for good. Mary’s ideas are petty and small and should have no impact on any thinking person.

only just decided to use out of desperation:
If this is true – and since I have no details or documentation, I can only treat it as a hypothetical – I would say to hell with whether or not it demonstrates sisterhood – lack of basic integrity seems like a more basic issue and one that is manifesting itself once again.

As Megadeath stated in their song “Sweating Bullets:” “Hello Me Meet the Real Me” or in the case of the 79th District and Mary Fontanta-Nichols’ deceptive attack on Bryon De Lear “Hello Mary Meet The Real Mary.” As a causal observer of the 79th district, I feel it necessary to advise all interested parties to check out “Mary Fontanta-Nichols” at the website http://www.www.courts.mo.gov For those are who curious, you can check it our for yourselves. I recently read in another publication about the city of Maryland Hieghts loosing a $1.8 million in an emminent domain lawsuit. The Maryland Heights City Council offered of approxiametely $60,000, for an easement for a road expansion that destroyed the full economic value of the landowners’ property. Since Mary Nichos is a member of Maryland Hieghts City Council, the government of Maryland Hieghts is ran, in part, by guest who? Mary Nichols. Talk about being a bully. Is this a regular pattern on the part of Mary Nichols and her cornies at the Maryland Hieght Government Center? I hope not but it is so. My friendly advise for Mary Nichols “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.”

I grew up with Byron. Byron and I were best of friends in grade school and I have known him my entire life. As a conservative I wish Byron was not a Democrat. I lost touch with Byron for few years after high school and when we caught up in 1988 I was shocked at his political leanings, how someone as intelligent as Byron could be a Democrat is beyond me. He would make a great addition to the conservative movement. If you guys ever want to trade him I can offer you Sarah Palin in exchange.
